Test Results – Real World

FSX does almost all of its heavy lifting in one hardware thread so the return of SMT in the Core i7 architecture has no real performance impact here. The only real noteworthy score is that of the 920 under the low setting, where the higher frequency, FSB, and lower latencies of the QX9770 outpace the mainstream part and keeps even with the greater system bandwidth and larger caches of the Core i7 965.

On IL-2: 1946, the higher QPI rate of the Core i7 965 Extreme pulls ahead of the other two processors, both of which perform very close to one another under the low setting. The high-end Core i7 again pulls ahead under the high setting, which also sees the mainstream 920 outscoring the QX9770 by almost 15%.

Testing Silent Hunter 4, the two high-end processors produce similar results under the low setting, with the 920 trailing behind by a pretty significant margin in both categories. Increasing the resolution and in-game settings saw less of a hit with the Core 2 Extreme CPU, which nudged out the Core i7 965 Extreme by almost 10%.
