I punch off the ODAB-500PM bombs and firewall the throttles to escape a flood of 23mm tracers spraying past my canopy. |
“One, defensive, triple-A!”On target!“Where is the firing coming from, Sacha?”
I force my heart down from my throat as I pull the MiG into a four-g turn back toward target.
“There is a convoy at the bridge, south of the station. At least one, maybe two 23-millimeter guns. One, in hot for rockets!”
“Careful, that Shilka will pluck you from the sky!”
“Da. Get set for your pass, Vasily. It will have to be quick.”
I sight in on the flaming wreck of the rear two-thirds of the parked train… | |
…and fire my S-24. |
It flies straight and true, detonating among the T-80 tanks, on the flatcars forward of the initial explosion. I hope I have damaged them; I should have brought RBK cassettes instead of the FAE bombs for this. I fume at my stupidity.
“I cannot line up, the triple-A has me locked, curse them!”
The Shilkas are warning Vasily off. I begin to call out, but a flash to my left catches my eye. I pull out my binoculars, and my heart stops.
