They Make Being Huge Look Good…

I’ll be up-front, I don’t care for flying the heavies. They’re large, ungainly, and take three counties in West Texas to turn. However, the aircraft in this collection look really, REALLY good. I could take screenshots of them all, but that’s a hell of a lot of pictures. Suffice it to say, the team that developed this was thorough. They really wanted to make sure you could fly this beast on just about any continent and have it blend in.

The graphics on the outside are attractive, but where it counts, in cockpit, they can best be described as… functional. There’s quite a bit of detail, and while I’ve never been in the cockpit of a DC-10, I have sat in the driver’s seat of a John Deere 9030 four-wheel drive behemoth. There’s a hell of a resemblance between the two. It’s the aviation equivalent of a Cat D-6 dozer.

However, what the makers may not have done in detail, they’ve made up for with volume, which carries an attention to detail all its own. There are no less than five instrument panels you can call up to literally turn on the “Please Don’t Have Sex on The Galley Prep Station Table” sign while encountering turbulence.

The ramp start procedure is so detailed, and so lifelike, it can best be summed up in the following checklist:

1. Start FSX
2. Throw 768 switches in the correct order while praying to the gods of McDonnell-Douglas
3. Hit Shift+E, get out, and go fly the Cessna 152 sitting next to you on the tarmac

There is literally so much real estate in the instrument panels, you will desperately need that second monitor to fit it all in your view.
