So how does it fasten to the headphones, anyway? It does that with a two-way adjustable clip, seen here:
See the hinge? Well, push down and pull (or is it pull down and push?) and it opens up further so that the clip can accommodate different sized headphone bands. Up to 1 ¼ inches wide and ½ inch thick. A nice idea that, and good for the wonderful world of diversity we live in.
Let’s take a look at the unit attached to my Creative Labs HS-600 headphones.
Kind of tough to see, but inside that orange reflective material is a little red light that comes on when the unit is firing away. The receiving unit sees those and immediately knows what they are and where they are. The tracking screen in the software sees those LED’s very clearly and I think it helps with movement accuracy.
With my TrackIR Vector clip, I used to turn on a lamp which sits upon the top shelf of my computer desk, and behind the TrackIR receiver. The idea being that the light would rebound off the three reflective squares on the clip and make tracking better. Necessary? Don’t know, I just have these quirks. With the TrackClipPRO, the lamp is no longer on, in fact, it was a bit of a hindrance.
Just after I started using the new unit, in the tracking window of the software, I began seeing some red glints (not good, usually an indication of another source of reflected light). I couldn’t figure out where it was coming from, I’m pretty good about not having lights behind me, mirrors, etc.
What I learned was the unit was picking up reflections of the lamp light off my glasses. Aha! Turn the lamp off, reflections disappear, just three green dots like it’s supposed to be.
