This test, according to Futuremark, reflects simultaneous drive chores, such as video recording and data streaming, and shows the VelociRaptor destroying both drives. This test result is why we decided to re-run all tests to check for consistency. WD’s new 10K RPM drive produced results almost 1,000% higher than that of the Maxtor and almost 100% that of the older Raptor.

This test reflects drive performance while cataloguing the user’s music library and shows the VelociRaptor again dominating the other drives, more than doubling the Maxtor’s score and outperforming the older Raptor by a solid 35%.

The VelociRaptor again doubles the score produced by the Maxtor and bests the older Raptor by roughly 35%.

These scores are simply the total result of the eight separate tests found in the drive suite. We’re not certain if each test is given equal weight toward producing this aggregate score, but regardless the VelociRaptor’s result is 150% that of the Maxtor and almost 50% that of the older Raptor.

Flight Simulator X’s settings were configured at the highest available options to increase the data required to load the saved free flight file, which is that of an AirTrike flying over Rio de Janeiro at roughly 5k elevation. Load times were recorded with a stop watch and the test system was rebooted between each test. Each time below is the average of three tests per hard drive.

A 15 second difference between the VelociRaptor and the 7200 RPM Maxtor is significant, and the new Raptor even shaves five seconds off the load time of the older Raptor.
