I also shot some still photographs and have set up some comparison shots to compare reality to FSX. The first is a picture taken approaching the airport from about 15 miles to the northwest (sorry about the reflections in my photos).
Soon we are turning from the wide left base onto final approach for runway 09 at TNCM. It certainly looks like FSX captured the general shape, terrain features, and even water colors of the shallows correctly.
On final approach we can start to make out individual buildings and specific features of the island. In real life you rarely have the opportunity to “sight-see” since your primary duty is flying the aircraft or helping out as the non-flying pilot.
On short final to runway 09 we can start to make out individual aircraft, vehicles and other structures that make up the airport. As you can see, FSX used an odd choice for the trees for Saint Maarten since most of the island is covered in hearty, scrubby foliage instead of large deciduous type trees.
If you are ever vacationing in St. Marteen I would highly encourage you to spend a day at Maho Beach. The bay and beach are just under the approach end of runway 09 and the beach access allows you to be in closer proximity to landing and departing aircraft than you’ve ever likely experienced. Not only is it a beautiful beach, with some decent snorkeling, there is also a well positioned bar (Sunset Beach Bar) with great drinks and freshly grilled food.
