A Short Hop

Beach offered-up this short mission example.

To give you a flavor of the thing, here’s some selected mission highlights. Heading for my first strike against an enemy army base.

Keeping it simple for my first trip in the Falcon, I use CCIP and some good old iron bombs.

Much to my embarrassment my first pass turns out to be a “dry” run since I forgot to turn the Master Arm on. It seems that F4:AF has fixed the default state to be SAFE now. Nice trick. Oh, and remember to arm your ejection seat!

Much to my embarrassment again, after attempting to visually reacquire the complex my first group falls a wee-bit long, destroying what is later deemed an allied held building!

The second pass is better, scoring a direct hit on the target compound.

As I pull off from the strike, a MiG-29 leaks through the CAP and puts a missile into one of my wingmen. I quickly padlock him and come down on the deck to engage. Tracer fire zips past as an enemy ZSU sends a fire hose of bullets my way. Pulling up my Sidewinders I uncage the seeker and wait for the growl to turn into a shriek. I press the pickle button and the AIM-9 leaps from the rail and streaks down for a kill.

Oh yeah. That was fun! Amazing how after all these many months away my fingers fumble around and finally land on the right HOTAS buttons. A bomb on target and a kill — time to head for home. Another newcomer tip: be happy with minimal results. Live to fight another day and you’ll have a much more successful campaign. Multiple passes and chasing bad guys into their territory is a recipe for disaster! Enemy flights will pull you in like a spider’s web — with much the same results.

Some unique challenges lay ahead in the Balkans. In Korea things were pretty simple, allied aircraft were U.S. built and supplied and enemy aircraft were basically of Russian design. Here in the Balkans you will be fighting with a NATO force, so don’t be surprised if a MiG-21 is your support! Know who you are shooting at before releasing stuff off the rails!

A Tornado pulls off the runway after successfully recovering after taking some damage.

I actually survive my first campaign mission, and even manage to land without breaking anything!

There is now a functioning cockpit canopy release lever.

Campaign debriefs include some new developments, including ATC deviations (I didn’t follow proper takeoff and climb out instructions!).
