A Modder’s Diary – Episode I: The Terrain Page 2

Why I Was Wrong

The Third Wire series is unique from the perspective that it marks a singularly welcome point in time. A combat flight sim developer openly offered people the chance to take a basic framework of a game and do anything they could think of to it, short of things that are still illegal in Kentucky.

Now, it’s not like modding a flight sim is anything new. We’ve been able to get aftermarket modifications to Microsoft Flight Simulator since about, Version 5, I think. Sim pilots have been able to fly the red-eye from Kinshasa to Khartoum for Air Congo for a long time now. But, now… we could shoot stuff down in every one of the Romance languages… although there are a couple of those languages that wouldn’t entice Jenna Jameson into bed if she were drunk and unconscious.

And so, I completely ignored this brain trust and it got me in deep kimsche. Turns out, they’re not much different than me. There seems to be no age bracket, the only limit being their computer proficiency. Most of these guys are tinkerers, using home-built machines instead of boutique computers. All are smart, motivated, they are generally professionals of one sort or another, and are genuinely dedicated to the game. They were not unlike my classmates in college, with the exception that they drink more beer. Given who I went to school with, I didn’t think that was possible.

...or sees this one.

…or sees this one.

I began to take a look at some of the things being done by this ensemble cast and I began to wonder just what I missing out on. I didn’t like New Coke, I never owned a pair of parachute pants, and I had no idea who the hell Milli Vanilli was. I really hate being behind the trends, so I decided to explore this odd world and determine if I was missing out on a new experience in gaming or just building up my wife’s case in divorce court. A sojourn, if you will. A journey into just what makes this bunch of people tick.

Turns out, it’s beer.
