Flying Impressions
And as nice as it all looks, it flies even better. Perhaps it’s more correct to say that it flies like you’d expect a Hind would. It’s a clumsy, ponderous beast when slow, and only marginally better at speed. I was flying a mission that took me over some high mountains in Lebanon, and as I sailed over the top of the ridge and started down, I swear I could feel the inertia start to build. I had the power rolled off for the descent, and I found I had to pull a load of collective and pitch up severely to get over a hill along my route on the way down. And even then I wondered if I was going to clear it. This thing is not a modern recon/attack copter, and does not fly like one. The Hind is a lesson in physics, all right.
I often find that if a developer has done a exceptional job with a particular simulated aircraft, the best way to fly it is using real-life procedures. In real life, and now, in EECH, the best attack profile for the Hind is a long, slow descent, starting about 5 klicks out. You can put your cannon fire or missiles right where you want them, and if you’re good, still have some stand-off distance from the target to start your turn, so you don’t have to overfly the folks you’ve just been shooting at. If you’re not that good, you’ll appreciate how the Hind can soak up a ridiculous amount of ground fire and still keep flying.
Landing is easier if you fly it like the real world guys do, too. An abbreviated pattern to the landing point, slowing gradually, is the best way to arrive at the FARP. Look out slightly to the side when you enter the flare. As you settle to the ground, switch to outside view and watch as the aircraft’s suspension soaks up your ham-fistedness and makes your touchdown look good.
While flying this test I kept wondering what I’d find that I didn’t like. Because there’s so much here, and it’s done so well. In the end, I can’t find anything big to complain about. My biggest objection is the glare on the gauges. A little is good, but I think, and this is just me, that it may be a bit overdone. However, since I have zero time in the real Hind I would not be at all surprised to learn that it’s an accurate representation. It would be just like arneh to get that right, too.
