Conclusion

Civilization IV is still the King and with all its great add-ons, mods, and improvements it is a kick butt turn-based game. You’ll be able to find plenty of online action with Civ IV, and of course there will be user made mods, units, and missions.

With Civ IV you have to build and manage, and that can be quite tedious at times — especially later in the game when you have TONS of stuff going on. If you liked Civ II or any of the Civilization games for that matter, you’ll love Civ IV and I highly recommend you go out and buy yourself a copy. Alternately you can buy it as a download from Fileplanet’s Direct2Drive online store.

Shattered Unions surprised me and I think I’ll keep this one for a long while also, just for a change of pace from the usual flight sim, squad shooter, or even Civilization IV which sometimes requires too much think time. Shattered Union is a good, tactical, yet simple turn-based strategy game. If you enjoy combat like what can be found in the “Generals” series, but at a slower pace and without the building, then you can’t go wrong with Shattered Union.

Both games are similar by genre, but very different in game play, action, and thought pattern. Both have multiplayer built-in, but because Civ IV is more popular you’d have a better chance of finding a multiplayer game.

In addition, they play well on my laptop so they’re good for trips or long waits. I plan to keep both of them on the hard drive for a long time.
