Enemy (RE)Engaged: EECH Revisited Page 9

On the topic of perhaps adding new 3D models that would allow for more diverse orders of battle:

“Tamlin and others figured out how the 3D objects are read and it seems possible but nobody has made the effort to incorporate it in the old code. It’s just too big a job for a modder who has only a bit of spare time to offer. But being able to read a 3D object is only part of the problem. The object also has to behave in a meaningful way so it is much more then only 3D modeling; you certainly need coders to add the new vehicle or aircraft to the list and then add the physics and the reaction properties (a bit like they are described in the WUT file). Also in the case of new entities they have to exist in the war zone database files. It is much easier to replace what is there (starting with an Apache cockpit for instance).”

– Gotcha

It is clear that the fans and modders of EECH are enthusiastic and are making good progress towards improving what was already an excellent helicopter sim. With the glory days of teams such as Razorworks and Jane’s Simulations fading it is heartening to see that older titles are still weathering the test of time. There is no reason not to think that EECH will still be residing on our hard drives in five more years. What it will look like and how much it will have evolved remains to be seen.

I would like to thank all of the members of the EECH modding community that e-mailed me and responded to my numerous questions and requests for information. Without your help this article would not have been possible. The road to the current state of EECH is long and is the result of thousands of hours of modding and testing by dedicated members of the community. I tried to credit as many people for their contributions as I could based on the information I was able to collect, but there are tons of people that I haven’t mentioned in the article that have participated in the modding community in many different ways. I apologize for any glaring oversights, they are mine alone.
