Multiplayer
After single player we’re off for the multiplayer part. There are several game modes, a free for all mode, team deathmatch and assault (one team lead an assault on a defensive position while the other team defends this position. You must be registered with Ubisoft to be able to play multiplayer. Registering is always a dull part but I found an old log-in (probably from my days with Rainbow Six) and logged in to the multiplayer menu (you also have to type in your CD-key before you can enter the server menu).
In assault mode there are three types of player classes: sniper, engineer and soldier. The sniper is armed with the sniper rifle, the engineer has a tool to repair and build bases and is also equipped with health packs. He can heal the other soldiers and can also destroy enemy buildings. The soldier is suited for combat and armed with deadly weapons. It sounds like assault is very team-oriented — if played correctly.
As the game is almost two years old there is not a lot of multiplayer activity on the net, although I counted more then 170 servers. But the few ones that had players on them had such a high ping I didn’t bothered to join them. If you are after multiplayer action only, maybe you should look for something else. Games such as UT2004 have the same game modes plus a few other game modes, as well as bots and also better vehicle action. I don’t know if vehicles are available in the multiplayer component of Far Cry. Multiplayer is not your typical run-and-gun because you will go down after a few shots.
Conclusion
The game is a lot of fun. There’s something about it when you play it. Either when you are eavesdropping on some mercs chatting about the situation or arguing if they’re evil or not. Or when you are riding the mini gun on a HUMVEE while your AI friend, Valerie Constantine, drives it. The short escort part actually works as she mostly can take care of herself.
Despite the checkpoint auto save system, mutants and the difficult ending, it’s a great action game and you have to use tactics to get through it. That will probably appeal to the SimHQ crowd. Far Cry still looks great and each of the twenty levels will take about an hour or so to complete. That leaves you with a lot of gameplay, and let’s not forget the replay value of the game. It’s also a very cheap game. I bought if for 99 SEK which is roughly 12 USD.
