Packaging, Installation, Settings and Performance

It comes on CD and DVD. I bought the DVD version and as always with a single disc, the installation went easier than with multiple CDs. After the installation I went through several patches to update the game as I was unable to find the latest patch in one package. There are following patches that needs to be applied; 1.3, 1.31, 1.32 and 1.33. I also applied a mod/hack that enables quick save as that feature is not available in the game, instead the game auto saves at various checkpoints. The quick save program is in German but it’s still easy to understand for those of us that don’t speak German. With F5 you save and F9 you load. I doubt anything is overwritten. Files are added and take up roughly 3 megabytes. Then a new exe file is created and the original one can still be used. I’ve used this hack for one year now and it works like a charm. Although there will be some minor AI bugs such as the AI will get stuck in their tracks, it doesn’t happen that often and you only need to reload the latest save and all will be normal. Also, when you are killed and reload a quick save within the game, the little radar/compass to the left is blacked out and to overcome that you need to load the quick save from within the “Load Check Point” menu (the quick save is always the latest save point). I also added a god mode hack (explained later on) which is accessible through the campaign menu. You only need to check the box and return to the game and you’re in god mode and don’t need to restart the game or start a new campaign.

With all these patches and modifications/hacks installed, we are ready to set up the game. I’ve had the opportunity to play this game on two computers and the more power the better. The first rig was an Intel P4 3.0GHz, 1GB of PC3200 RAM @ 400MHz, Asus Geforce 6600GT 128MB (AGP) and a SB Audigy Player. The game had OK frame rates with the graphic settings at max running at 1280×1024, but it ran a lot smoother at 1024×768. Just a week before Christmas 2005 I bought a new rig and it runs great at 1600×1200 with everything maxed including HDR, which was implemented with patch 1.3 along with Doppler Effect, EAX 2.0 and Hardware Mixing (these sound options had to disabled on my previous computer due to low frame rates). I never had any noticeable drop of frame rates on my current rig.

Then we have a wide range of graphic options within the game. A similar menu is available in Windows called “Configure Far Cry”. You can set how many seconds you want corpses to stay in the game world (mine is set at 999). In Video Options you set resolution, anti-aliasing, full screen and Vertical Sync. After that, we have advanced Video Options where we have a lot of graphic quality to set (low, medium, high, very high and also ultra high). At Sound Options we can set speakers and other already mentioned sound options. In all the game is very scalable to suit every kind of computer.
